Why does my tooth hurt when I bite down?

Pain when you bite down almost always means something is putting uneven pressure on a nerve or a crack inside the tooth: a fracture, a high or failing filling, deep decay, or infection at the root tip. What's actually causing the pain

Check if the tooth feels loose, if there's a visible chip, or if the gum around it looks puffy or has a small bump. None of this replaces an exam, but it helps a dentist narrow things down before they even look, and it helps you judge how quickly to act.
What you shouldn't do is keep testing it by biting down repeatedly to see if it still hurts. If there's a crack, repeated pressure can push it deeper into the tooth, which changes a straightforward filling into a root canal.
