Dental Crowns
A crown is a complete covering for a tooth that has lost too much of itself to a break, deep decay or a root canal. It restores full chewing strength and, matched properly, disappears among its neighbours. Most crowns here are fitted across two visits.
When a tooth needs a crown
Fillings rebuild small losses. Once a tooth has lost a large corner, cracked, or been hollowed by a root canal, a filling has nothing solid to hold onto, and the next bite in the wrong place can split the tooth beyond saving. A crown caps the whole tooth, holding it together and taking the load evenly.
We fit metal-free crowns in Emax and zirconia: Emax where looks lead, zirconia where the bite is heaviest. The shade is matched to your neighbouring teeth, and the fit is checked and adjusted against your bite at the fitting visit.

The tooth is shaped, precise impressions are taken, and a temporary crown protects it in the meantime.

Dental Crowns: your questions, answered
How long does a dental crown last?
Ten to fifteen years is routine for a well-made ceramic crown, and many serve longer. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth under it can, so ordinary brushing, flossing and checkups remain the maintenance plan.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The preparation is done under local anaesthetic and feels similar to a large filling. Some sensitivity for a few days after each visit is normal. If the tooth has had a root canal, the preparation is usually painless even without much anaesthetic.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A veneer covers only the front face of a tooth and is cosmetic. A crown covers the entire tooth and is structural, restoring strength a damaged tooth has lost. If the tooth is mostly intact, a veneer preserves more of it; if it is broken down, only a crown will hold it together.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
On back teeth, almost always. A root-treated tooth is hollowed and becomes brittle, and chewing forces on molars will eventually crack it without full coverage. Front teeth take less load and can sometimes manage without.
A cracked or heavily filled tooth rarely announces when it is about to break. If you have one you are nursing, have it assessed before it decides for you.
