How often should you actually see a dentist?

21 July 2026 · The Dentist, Al Qusais, Dubai

The short answer

Every six months for most adults. Healthy mouths with excellent home care can stretch to twelve months; anyone with gum disease, heavy tartar buildup or lots of existing dental work should come more often. The interval exists because most dental problems are cheap to fix early and expensive to fix late.

Where the six-month rule comes from

Six months is roughly how long it takes early problems to become established ones. A small patch of decay takes months to grow into a cavity that needs a filling. Plaque left in hard-to-reach spots takes months to harden into tartar and inflame the gum. Catching things inside that window is the difference between a polish and a procedure.

It is not a law of nature, though. Dentists in several countries now tailor the recall interval to the individual mouth, and that is how we work too: a healthy mouth with good brushing and flossing may be fine at twelve months, while active gum disease might need a visit every three.

What a checkup actually catches

The obvious things are decay and gum inflammation. The less obvious ones matter just as much: cracks from night grinding before they split the tooth, wear patterns that show your bite is drifting, early signs of infection under old fillings and crowns, and oral health changes that point at wider issues. X-rays, taken when needed, show what no mirror can.

The economics are blunt. A checkup and clean cost less than any filling. A filling costs a fraction of a root canal and crown. A root canal and crown cost a fraction of an extraction and implant. Every skipped year of checkups is a bet that nothing on that ladder is quietly climbing.

Making it easy to actually go

Most people do not skip checkups out of fear; they skip them because clinics keep office hours. That is why The Dentist stays open until 21:00 on weekdays and Saturday afternoons, and why the first checkup for new patients is free. Book the free checkup, get an honest picture of where your mouth stands, and we will agree a recall interval that fits it. Often the answer after a checkup is that nothing needs doing at all, which is exactly the point.
