Can you get braces or aligners if you already have veneers or crowns?

The short answer
Yes, you can usually get braces or aligners even if you already have veneers or crowns, but the approach needs adjusting. Clear aligners are generally the easier option because they don't need glue bonded to the restoration. Traditional metal or ceramic braces can still work, but the dentist has to check whether the bracket will bond properly to porcelain and whether the crown or veneer is on a natural tooth or an implant. This is a case-by-case decision, so a proper examination and a chat between your restorative dentist and orthodontist comes first.
Why veneers and crowns change the plan
Traditional brackets are bonded to teeth with a resin adhesive that grips onto etched enamel. Porcelain veneers and crowns have a smooth, glazed surface that doesn't etch the same way, so the bond can be weaker and brackets are more likely to pop off mid-treatment. It's not dangerous, just annoying and it slows progress down while you keep going back to have brackets reattached.
This is less of an issue with composite veneers, since composite resin bonds to itself reasonably well. But feldspathic and Emax veneers, and porcelain crowns, need a different bonding protocol or a switch to aligners altogether.
None of this means treatment is off the table. It means your dentist needs to look at what material each restoration is made from, how old it is, and how it's holding up before deciding on the method.
Aligners are usually the simpler route
Clear aligners move teeth through gentle, sustained pressure from a series of custom trays, not glued-on brackets. That makes them a more forgiving option when you've already got veneers or crowns, because there's far less risk of dislodging a restoration during treatment.
There's a smaller wrinkle worth knowing about. Aligners sometimes need small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to certain teeth to help grip and rotate them. If a tooth with a veneer needs an attachment, the same bonding consideration applies, though it's a much smaller surface area than a full bracket and rarely causes problems.
Crowns behave a bit differently depending on what's underneath. A crown on your own natural tooth root moves with orthodontic pressure just like any other tooth. A crown on a dental implant does not move at all, because the implant is fused to bone rather than held in a socket with a ligament. If you have an implant crown, that tooth effectively becomes a fixed point and the treatment plan has to work around it rather than through it.
What needs checking before you start
Before committing to braces or aligners with existing restorations, a dentist typically wants to know the age of the veneer or crown, its material, the health of the gum around it, and whether any tooth underneath has had root canal treatment. Older restorations with worn margins are more prone to chipping under new pressure, so replacing a veneer either before or after orthodontic movement sometimes makes sense, and that's a conversation your dentist should walk you through with reasons, not just an instruction.
