Can veneers be whitened after they're fitted?

The short answer
No, not with whitening gel or trays. Porcelain and composite veneers are made from materials that don't absorb the peroxide used in teeth whitening, so bleaching has no effect on their shade once they're fitted. If a veneer looks discoloured, the fix is either a thorough professional clean to remove surface staining, or replacing the veneer if the colour change is inside the material itself. A dentist needs to look at it to tell which one you're dealing with.
Why whitening gel doesn't work on veneers
Teeth whitening works because peroxide gel penetrates the enamel and breaks down the pigment molecules trapped inside it. Enamel is porous enough to let this happen. Porcelain, whether it's Emax or feldspathic, is glazed and essentially non-porous. Composite veneer material is also far denser than natural tooth structure. Peroxide sits on the surface and does nothing to the colour underneath, no matter how long you leave it on or how strong the gel is.
This is why dentists always whiten natural teeth before fitting veneers, never after. If you veneer first then try to whiten, you're stuck with whatever shade the veneer already is.
What actually changes a veneer's appearance over time
Veneers can look less white for two quite different reasons, and the treatment for each is completely different. The first is surface staining: coffee, red wine, tea, turmeric and smoking leave pigment on the outer layer, especially along the gum edge or in tiny scratches from years of chewing. This kind of dulling responds well to professional polishing, which buffs the surface back to its original glossy finish without touching the underlying material. It's the same principle as polishing a car's paintwork.
The second cause is deeper and can't be polished away. Composite veneers, being a resin material, can absorb some pigment over years, particularly if they're older or the surface has become slightly rough. Porcelain veneers don't stain internally in the same way, but the cement line at the edge can discolour, or the veneer itself can look mismatched if your natural teeth around it have darkened with age. In these cases, polishing helps a little but doesn't restore the original shade fully. The only real fix is replacing the veneer with a new one matched to your current tooth colour.
Keeping veneers looking their best without whitening them
Since you can't bleach veneers back to white, prevention does most of the work. Rinsing with water after coffee or red wine, using a non-abrasive toothpaste, and avoiding tobacco all slow down surface staining considerably. Professional cleaning every six months removes the buildup before it has a chance to set into the surface, and it's worth doing whether you have veneers or natural teeth.
