Are veneers permanent, and what happens when they wear out?

There are two different "permanent" questions here

Patients usually mean one of two things when they ask this. Either "will these last forever" or "can I go back to my natural teeth if I don't like them". The answers are different, and both matter.

The veneers themselves will not last forever. They're a restoration, like a filling or a crown, and every restoration has a lifespan. The preparation of the tooth underneath, though, can be permanent in a real sense. For Emax and feldspathic veneers, we remove a thin layer of enamel, usually 0.3 to 0.7mm, so the veneer sits flush and doesn't look bulky. Enamel doesn't grow back. Once that's done, the tooth is committed to wearing a veneer or crown indefinitely. Composite veneers, by contrast, can sometimes be built up with little or no enamel removal, which makes them more reversible, but they also don't last as long.

How long each type actually lasts, and why

Emax veneers (lithium disilicate) generally hold up for 10 to 15 years with normal care. They resist staining well and the material is strong in compression, which is why they cope well with normal biting forces. What ends their life is usually a chip from biting something hard, a crack at the margin, or the underlying tooth changing (a new cavity, gum recession exposing the edge).

Feldspathic veneers are thinner and more translucent, which is why they're chosen for very natural-looking front teeth. They can last just as long as Emax in the right mouth, but they're less forgiving of grinding or heavy bite force.

Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth in one visit rather than made in a lab. They're more affordable and fully reversible in many cases, but the material is softer. Expect 3 to 5 years before they need polishing, repair, or replacement, sometimes sooner if you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or red wine, or if you grind your teeth at night.

What actually happens when a veneer wears out

It's rarely dramatic. The most common sign is a stained line at the gum edge, where the cement margin has worn slightly and picked up colour over the years. Sometimes a corner chips off, usually from biting a fingernail, ice, or a pen cap. Occasionally a veneer debonds entirely, especially if it was fitted on a tooth with a lot of old filling material rather than natural enamel, which bonds better.

None of this is an emergency, but it does need a dentist to look at it rather than waiting it out. A cracked or lifted veneer can let bacteria in underneath, and because the tooth has already been prepared, there's no natural enamel surface left to fall back on if decay sets in. The fix is nearly always the same: remove the old veneer, check and clean the tooth underneath, and fit a new one. If the tooth has changed shape slightly over the years (a bit of recession, a slight shift), the new veneer gets adjusted to match, so it's not simply a straight swap.
